Longino, Spelman named 2010 Rhodes Scholars

Two UNC seniors, Libby Longino and Henry Spelman, were named 2010 Rhodes Scholars on Saturday.

The prestigious scholarship will provide full tuition, board and living expenses for the two to study at Oxford University for two or three years.

Longino and Spelman are the 44th and 45th Rhodes Scholars selected from UNC since the Rhodes program began in 1904, and the ninth and 10th in the last eight years.

Longino, a public policy and English double major, is from Dallas, Texas. She interviewed for the scholarship Saturday in Houston. She is the president of the Roosevelt Institute and a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and the student attorney general's staff.

Spelman, a classics major with a minor in creative writing, is from Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. He interviewed for the scholarship Saturday in Philadelphia. He is a member of Chi Psi fraternity, the squash club, and is editor of The Cellar Door, among several other campus activities. He earned one of UNC's Chancellor's Awards in April for his work with Latin and Greek. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa last spring.

The pair, who are currently dating, are both Morehead-Cain scholars.

The Rhodes Scholarship's value averages $50,000 per year and varies with each student’s course of study.
