Triangle residents voice transit concerns

Long-range plan involves half-cent sales tax

Officials from the Triangle Transit Authority held a public forum at the Cary Town Hall Tuesday night.

People got a glimpse at several TTA proposals that could be included in their long-range 2035 plan for the Triangle. The plan proposes the use of
light rail transit, commuter rail, rapid bus transit and the expansion of existing bus services.

Transit routes, maps, and posters that compared national commuter facts with those in the Triangle filled the main hall and televisions played
looping videos that reminded residents that TTA expects the Triangle population to grow by 75 percent in the next 25 years.

“We try to be responsible to the community,” said Damien Graham, government affairs manager for Triangle Transit Authority.

Graham said part of being responsible to the community is informing them of the potential options before voters decide to approve a half-cent sales
tax increase in the fall of 2011. Residents are encouraged to leave their comments at the forums.

Graham said the TTA saw a large number of turnouts at the Durham and Raleigh forums.

The tax referendum, along with comments collected at the public forums, will decide what kind of transportation Triangle residents will see in the future.

“It’s probably the most exciting time besides (actually) building something,” Graham said.
