Peter Watson ushered in his second year as coach of the North Carolina cross country team with a first-place finish from UNC’s men and women at the annual Covered Bridge Open in Boone on Friday.

Both the men’s and the women’s team placed three runners in the top ten. The men claimed first overall in the 6.4k distance and the women first in the 5k distance, beating out ACC foes Wake Forest and Florida State in a show of early-season prowess.

Senior Evan Watchempino nabbed the top spot in the men’s group with a time of 19:38.14, more than four seconds before his closest opponent crossed the line.

“Our team definitely made a statement at the season opener,” Watchempino said. “Being a freshman and coming into a new environment, it’s hard to adjust to running farther and faster. They could have run better together but that’s something they will learn as they go.”

Cary native Mohamed Abushouk, another top-ten runner, managed a 19:59.30 in Friday’s race. The freshman outran his personal goal of 20 minutes in his first race for UNC.

“We were running mostly freshmen, not our top upperclassmen since the real meets haven’t started,” he said. “So it’ll be really exciting when we have all the pieces working together. We are really going to be a team to contend with.”

Freshman Jacque Taylor, in her first competition as a Tar Heel, took a strong second-place in the women’s race with a time of 17:56.30, one of only three women to run the course in under 18 minutes.

Sophomore Mariana Lucena came in fifth with a time of 18:10.95, placing one slot below her fourth-place finish last year but running the course 18 seconds faster.

“That definitely boosts my confidence,” Lucena said. “It’s so good to know you’re starting the season faster than you did last year, even if you are finishing the race at a lower placing — to run faster is always nice.”

Freshman men’s runner Patrick Schellberg and junior women’s runner Carter Norbo also had top-10 times to help the Tar Heels take home the win.

“The attitude that (the freshmen) belong and aren’t afraid to go with everybody and get up there to the front of the pack is great,” Watson said. “It’s very different from the team I inherited a year ago.

“They went out and got it done. It was good for their official college debut. We are just going to work on staying healthy and consistent for our next race here at home.”

The Tar Heels will host the UNC Invitational Friday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. at Finley Fields.
