The Daily Tar Heel

The UNC Supportive Care Consult Service and Clinic received recognition in the November issue of the Journal of Oncology Practice for an outpatient team approach that produces significant improvements in symptoms resulting from cancer or its treatment.

The team, working under an innovative program, includes a physician, a clinical nurse specialist and a clinical pharmacist practitioner. It is innovative in that pharmacist John Valgus is the main provider of supportive care services to many of the patients.

Valgus, the author of the journal article, explained that the team travels to patients during their oncology clinic visits, preventing the patients from having to schedule yet another appointment for care.

The pharmacist first sees the patients when an assessment and medical history are taken. Valgus said 75 percent of the consults were for pain management.

The results of Valgus’ team were comparable to those produced by the UNC inpatient Palliative Care team.
