Dive recommends for Sep. 8

Elvis Presley: This one’s from way back in the vault — 1954, to be exact. Elvis’ performance on the Louisiana Hayride radio show helped launch him to stardom. If you want to dig toward the roots of rock ‘n’ roll, start here.

“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”: Don’t believe the negative hype behind this 1978 movie based mostly around the classic Beatles album of the same name. Look beyond the Bee Gees’ and Peter Frampton’s questionable acting skills and find the best cheesy movie you’ve ever seen. The movie also features a young Aerosmith, Earth, Wind & Fire and Steve Martin before he went completely gray. It’s no cinematic masterpiece, but it’s delightfully absurd. Isn’t that enough?

Magnolia Collective, Sarah Shook and The Devil

The Station | This local supergroup of sorts features members of the Pneurotics, Red Collar, The Whiskey Smugglers and Gambling the Muse. Originally dreamt up as a house band for a string of Americana shows, the Magnolia Collective has started to come into its own. Hit up this show if you’re down for some roots-rock and are looking for cheap weeknight music and dancing. 10 p.m., free

Pipe High Castle, Chest Pains, Jason Meeks

Nightlight | If easy Americana isn’t your scene, scoot down Rosemary St. to the Nightlight. Here you’ll find a dirty lineup of hard core and various incarnations of punk music. Pipe brings a hard-driving hard-core edge, while the other bands will help Pipe shake Nightlight down with a get pumped for the weekend vibe. 9 p.m., $6

Okkervil River, Wye Oak

Lincoln Theatre | If you missed Okkervil River this summer at Cat’s Cradle with Future Islands and Titus Andronicus, here’s your chance to make up for it. Both bands have their own brands of chilled out but secretly intense indie rock. Either band alone would make for a great show, but the two musical forces together guarantees a great evening. 8 p.m., $16.
