Three UNC students were arrested early Friday morning on charges of felony possession of cocaine, police said.

Shane Mularkey, Jacob Groeschen and Nicole Suarez are all former athletes at the University.

Mularkey is a former UNC linebacker and son of Mike Mularkey, who was hired in January to be the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach.

Groeschen was a walk-on quarterback for the UNC football team. He later served as a team manager, but didn’t return to his duties after the team’s December bowl game, UNC athletics spokesman Kevin Best said.

Suarez is a former member of the UNC women’s cross country team.

Best said the three are no longer affiliated with UNC athletics.

Mularkey and Groeschen were also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, while all three were charged with trespassing, said Sgt. Josh Mecimore, spokesman for the Chapel Hill Police Department.

While officers were conducting foot patrol on Wallace Parking Deck, located at 150 E. Rosemary St., a police officer observed one of the three subjects snorting something, Mecimore said.

Officers seized a plastic bag containing cocaine residue, Mecimore said. They also obtained the straw being used to snort the cocaine, he said. Both were seized as evidence, Mecimore said.

Mularkey, Groeschen and Suarez appeared before a magistrate Friday and were released on $1,000 unsecured bonds, Mecimore said.
