Chapel Hill resident killed in Carrboro crash

A Chapel Hill man died last night after his car struck a tree in Carrboro. The driver, David Quiroz of 1105 N.C. 54 West, was 24.

Around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department responded to an off-road accident near the intersection of Jones Ferry and Old Greensboro Roads, said Carrboro Deputy Fire Chief Richard Cox.

A car traveling at high speed hit a tree after going off the road, killing Quiroz.

State Highway Patrol office assistant Dawn Berry said Quiroz’s family has been informed about the crash. She said the accident likely occurred after Quiroz failed to stop at a stop sign, but further investigation and an autopsy will need to be performed before officials know more about the specific causes of the crash.

Orange County EMS Operations Manager Kim Woodward said Quiroz had seemingly died on impact.

“It appeared to be a very severe accident,” Woodward said.

An investigation into the accident is being handled by the Highway Patrol.
