With warmer weather comes softball victory against UNC-Greensboro, 6-0

“It was wonderful,” North Carolina sophomore second basemen Erin Satterfield said emphatically.

But she wasn’t referring to the Tar Heels’ 6-0 shut out victory on the road against UNC-Greensboro. Rather, she was relishing on how much of a joy, and relief, it was to play on a warm and beautiful afternoon.

In a season that has seen rain, ice, snow, freezing temperatures and any combination of the four, the Tar Heels finally found some nice weather.

With temperatures threatening to touch 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky, the UNC softball team eagerly took the field against the Spartans.

“I think everyone’s spirits were up because it was so nice, so we feel like real softball players and coaches,” coach Donna Papa said.

It certainly seemed like the Tar Heels came ready to play, putting four runs on the scoreboard before the Spartans had a chance to swing the bat. After a bases loaded walked from Kati Causey scored the Tar Heels’ first run, freshman right fielder Kendra Lynch stepped up to the plate.

“I went up to bat more relaxed. I tried to just keep my poise and stay calm,” Lynch said. “I knew she couldn’t beat me and I just had to do my job.”

Moments later, Lynch was standing on second base, bringing home two more of her teammates in the process.

A four run lead was more than enough for senior pitcher Lori Spingola, who improved to 9-6 on the season after giving up no runs and just three hits through five innings of work.

After starting the season 8-9, the Tar Heels have now won six of their last eight games and are playing their best softball of the season. One of the bright spots has been Satterfield’s consistent success at the plate. She continued her strong season versus the Spartans, going 2-2 with an RBI.

“She’s one of those players who’s just getting it done,” Papa said of Satterfield. “She finds ways to get on and be a spark for us up at the plate. Any role we’ve asked her to do, she’s embraced it and done it well.”

And if her first five weeks to the season haven’t proven her confidence and commitment, Satterfield isn’t afraid to show it.

“You know, midweek games are hard. You have class and other things, but those aren’t excuses," she said.

"Today, I think we came out and had a different attitude than midweek games in weeks before, and honestly, I don’t think we’ll go back to that place.”
