Hayley Carter overcomes injury to clinch win for women's tennis

Hayley Carter looked over to teammate Caroline Price and pumped her fist shouting, “Let’s go Heels!” as the scoreboard changed to be in her favor for the first time two sets.

A member of the No. 1 ranked UNC women’s tennis team, Carter is ranked No. 19 in the nation. At Friday’s match against Georgia Tech, she lost the first set of her singles match 4-6 and fell to an early 0-3 deficit in the second set.

The score wasn’t the only thing Carter had to overcome. She had turned her right ankle, which was already in a brace, early in the match.

“I always have a little something aching,” she said. “It is always a little bit in my head but I think I played through it pretty well (Friday).”

With this slight injury and the dismal score, Carter got some much-needed motivation from Coach Brian Kalbas.

“I kind of challenged (Carter) competitively when she was down 3-0, and she is such a gamer, she responded extremely well,” Coach explained.

And respond she did.

Carter recognized she wasn’t representing her team, or UNC, to the best of her ability. She regrouped mentally and began a tireless push to turn the match around.

Carter hammered home point after point, winning six straight games to send the match into a third set.

With the Tar Heels (13-0, 3-0 ACC) only needing one more point to clinch the win over the Yellow Jackets, Carter cruised from the second set win to later dominate the third set 6-3 without difficulty.

For her, winning the match was all about what was going on in her head.

“It was 95 percent mental,” she said. “The other five percent, I hit the ball more and tried to move around more, but it was 95 percent mental.”

Carter’s win clinched the Tar Heel’s victory, maintaining their undefeated status.

The team was not completely satisfied with the outcome, though.

“I think there were some ups and downs throughout the whole match today with everyone," said sophomore Jamie Loeb. "But we got it done and that’s what teams do. At least we found a way to win, but there is always room for improvement.”

The team quickly got an opportunity for improvement, playing at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center again Sunday against Virginia Tech.

This time there were no ups and downs.

Despite issues with her heel, Carter dominated in her match against Virginia Tech’s Francesca Fusinato, winning in two sets, 6-1 and 6-2.

Another day, another win for Carter and North Carolina’s undefeated women’s tennis team.
