Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation receives grant

The N.C. Recreation and Park Association is partnering with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of N.C. to make communities more active and promote healthy living.

BCBSNC provided grants to communities across the state to install PlayPrints which are ground markings that form colorful shapes and images.

The Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department received one of these grants. The Hargraves Community Center is the only park in Chapel Hill installing PlayPrints.

Nate Davis, supervisor of the center, said one will be located in front of the center, two near the playground and picnic shelter and one near the swimming pool.

Davis said the project is scheduled for Sept. 28 and should not last more than a week.

The BCBSNC press release said that children become more physically active in playgrounds with PlayPrints.

“It will be a great addition for the facility and the young kids,” said Davis. “It will give them some extra things to do when they’re outside playing.”

The additions will be available not just for the kids that attend the after-school programs and summer day camps at Hargraves, but for all members of the Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities.

Jessica Rauschenberg, spokeswoman of BCBSNC, said the PlayPrints are designed by a North Carolina vendor.

“NCRPA is excited about the opportunity to partner with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to bring PlayPrints to parks departments around the state. Through this partnership we are able to bring PlayPrints to over 40 parks and open spaces in our state, including Chapel Hill,” said Matt Carusona, program and marketing manager for N.C. Recreation and Park Association.

A total of 41 grants were awarded to city, town and county parks and recreation departments in the state. Applications for these grants opened in July and lasted until Aug. 6.

Carusona said most of the applicants that applied were awarded grants.

Rauschenberg said PlayPrints is a temporary initiative and is part of the BCBSNC Get Outside North Carolina! program.

She said the community has the option of choosing up to five prints for their facility.
