Four-star restaurant Crossroads Chapel Hill reopens for business

A local restaurant earning a Forbes Four-Star Service Award has reopened for business after going through an extensive remodel.

Crossroads Chapel Hill, located in the Carolina Inn, has been open for more than 20 years, but was closed over the summer for renovations and a name change. Formerly known as Carolina Crossroads Restaurant and Bar, Crossroads Chapel Hill reopened under the new name Friday.

Michelle Voelpel, director of marketing and public relations at the Carolina Inn, said the new name appeals to a younger generation.

"It's become more welcoming to new generations and young professionals and serve as central gathering place for UNC students, faculty, staff and Chapel residents and visitors,” Voelpel said in an email.

The renovations flipped the configuration of the restaurant and bar.

“The bar is located where the restaurant was previously located,” Voelpel said through email. "It features many comfortable gathering areas with booths, banquettes and tables with direct access to the newly-created outside venues.”

The outside venue includes a fire pit as the main focal point. The Carolina Inn also added a grab-and-go market called Pittsboro Street Provisions.

Mother-daughter pair, Mercedes and Miffy Riley, are from New York, but have eaten at Crossroads Chapel Hill several times when visiting Chapel Hill. Mercedes Riley said the restaurant flows better than before the renovations.

"The food is delicious, much better than last time," Mercedes Riley said. "It used to look like an English pub on the inside."

Professor Gerald Bell, of the Kenan-Flagler Business School, said he married his wife in the restaurant's new bar area 55 years ago.

“They’ve done a magnificent job making the porch inviting and enjoyable,” Bell said. "The gift to the students and alumni is they just made the Carolina Inn an even greater central place."
