UNC men's tennis continues early season success with win over Wofford

Fresh off its Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championship win a week ago, the North Carolina men’s tennis team continued its winning streak Sunday by handily defeating Wofford in little over an hour.

The top-ranked Tar Heels dominated throughout the match, eventually winning 7-0 to extend their record to 11-0 on the year.

The Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead by capturing the doubles point. Teammates Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider clinched their match 6-2, while Andrew Gores and Brayden Schnur triumphed 6-3 over their opponents.

In the singles matches, all six Tar Heels won their matches. Not a single one dropped a set.

Brett Clark (7-5, 6-0), Schneider (6-0, 6-2), Murray (6-1, 6-0), Robert Kelly (6-4, 6-1), Blaine Boyden (6-2, 6-4), and Stuart DePaolo (6-1, 6-0) all defeated their opponents.

Quotable

“I thought it was good coming back out after we had a great week last week. Coming out, getting refocused and getting back into match mode, because this whole week up until (now) has been a lot of celebration and congrats and blowing our heads up.” — Schneider on UNC's performance following its championship win.

Notable

North Carolina men's basketball coach Roy Williams was in attendance to support the Tar Heels fresh off his team's 96-71 victory over Miami.

Three numbers that matter

1: Sunday's match marked the first time in program history that North Carolina has played as the No. 1 team in the country.

0: The Tar Heels did not drop a single match against Wofford.

11: North Carolina has won 11 consecutive games to open the year.

What’s next?

The Tar Heels will be back in action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, when they take on UNC-Greensboro at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
