Victory Bell to be painted winning team's colors, after all

UNC and Duke decided to change the color scheme of the victory bell platform, and say no to post game spray-painting.

UNC and Duke decided to change the color scheme of the victory bell platform, and say no to post game spray-painting.

The winning team of today's Duke vs. UNC football game will get to paint the Victory Bell, after all.

The bell was painted both teams' colors earlier this week in an attempt at unity that alarmed many fans — but just in time for tonight's game, the tradition is back.

In a statement, Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham said the reversal came after talking to fans and the football team.

“We are glad to see the passion and support for the game and the Victory Bell and await an exciting and entertaining contest tomorrow evening," Cunningham said. "We will continue to share with people the history of the rivalry and the Victory Bell, while preserving the winning team’s enthusiasm for displaying their triumphant shade of blue.”
