The Daily Tar Heel

I know that Durham is the city of our enemy, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have good food. In fact, Durham is delicious. So, what if you just avoided the Dookies and tried a few of this city’s gems? Luckily, I found the best for you.

Dame’s Chicken and Waffles

I grew up eating some of the best chicken and waffles in the country, straight from Los Angeles’ Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles. It was so good that Will Smith regularly referenced it in "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Well, I’m sorry, Will, because Dame’s Chicken and Waffles may just serve up better. The soft waffles coupled with crispy fried chicken come together to create pure magic. But the best part is the shmears, which are sweet crème flavored butters. After Dame’s, you’ll never want to eat chicken and waffles without its trusty sidekick: shmear.

La Superior Carniceria

I know that everyone loves Cosmic Cantina. Allow me to change everyone’s opinions. If you can take the time to venture out to La Superior Carniceria, you won’t be disappointed. This joint will satisfy all of your Mexican food dreams with its homemade tortillas, ridiculously cheap baked goods and rich and creamy horchata. It certainly satisfied mine.

Lucky’s Delicatessen

Ended up @luckysdelinc yesterday, without my wallet! Mary said no problem, just come back, so I'm back today to pay my bill and for the best BLT ever. Thanks!!!

It’s easy to question what decade you’re in after walking into this vintage deli. Its subway tile walls, small wooden tables and bright red hanging lights will send you straight into the past, but the mouth-watering sandwiches and salads will put you right back in the present. From the chicken parm to the tuna melt, you are sure to expect a killer sandwich at this downtown Durham deli.

Guglhupf Bakery, Cafe & Restaurant

Guglhupf is a sight to behold. A grand staircase sweeps through the restaurant, leading up to a second floor lit by chandeliers and paper lanterns. Yep, it’s expensive, but you can get around the price by visiting the cafe and bakery. In the restaurant, everything is delectable, but their $9 schnitzel will transport you out of Durham and into the German countryside. It’s just that good.

Foster’s Market

Thanks a brunch for visiting me this weekend @twegg @jweggeland !

This charming country kitchen feels just like Grandma’s house, if your grandma was an award-winning chef. Mine wasn’t. Satisfied eaters swarm the light blue picnic tables outside. Hungry customers crowd the already-cramped country store, deciding between fresh-baked pies, homemade soups and carefully crafted wraps. While Chapel Hill may have its own version of Foster’s under the name The Root Cellar, like always, nothing beats the original.
