All Up In Your Business: The Children's Store set to close after 40 years in business

The Children’s Store in Chapel Hill announced it will be closing this summer after 40 years of business.

Becky Broun, the daughter of The Children’s Store’s founder, said that the store had been moving toward shutting down for several years because of the challenges of being a small business in such a competitive climate. Other factors began to surface which made closing the store more critical.

“Several things happened all at once,” Broun said. “My mom really wanted to retire, since she is 78 years old. Our store manager also wants to retire, and my husband got ill, so I was completely distracted with wanting to help him.”

Broun also said other administrative factors, such as lease renewal and building renovations led to their ultimate decision to close.

“This business needs an influx of energy and money which we didn’t have to give,” she said.

Broun said she and the other staff of The Children’s Store will miss working there.

“It’s just such a great job to go to every day,” she said. “I love the people we work with, I love the merchandise. The other day a little boy walked out of the store holding a giant golden retriever. He looked so happy, and I thought, ‘I’m going to miss this so much.’”

The Children’s Store will remain open until it finishes liquidating, which Broun estimates will be sometime this summer. Everything in the store is now 20 percent off.
