A car on Raleigh Road caught fire Thursday around 6:10 p.m. A lane of Raleigh Road is now blocked off by the Chapel Hill Police Department and the Fire Department.

UNC graduate Eric Spear was driving his car with his son and his son’s friend when he noticed there was smoke coming out of his car. He had recently had an oil change, but oil continued to leak out his car, and his car started emitting smoke. Eventually the car stopped operating on Raleigh Road. He said he and his son pushed the vehicle to the side of the road when a bystander noticed the front of Spear’s car caught on fire.

“Sure enough we saw the fire, so we just moved away and it didn’t take long for it to fully start catching on fire,” Spear said.

The Chapel Hill Fire Department was able to put out the fire, and the car is in a parking lot next off of Raleigh Road. Spear and the passengers lost a number of personal belongings, including a laptop.

This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available. Chichi Zhu contributed reporting.
