North Carolina women's golf wins Briar's Creek Invitational

The North Carolina women’s golf team finished first in the Briar’s Creek Invitational, its third tournament in a three-week span that wrapped up on Tuesday.

What happened?

In a 16 team tournament hosted by The College of Charleston, the Tar Heels played well while facing against four of the top-50 ranked teams in the Golfstat poll.

The Tar Heel golfers for the tournament were  Kelly Whaley, Ava Bergner, Mariana Ocano, Bryana Nguyen, and Brynn Walker.  Clementina Rodriguez also competed as an individual.  After the first round, the team combined for a score of two-under-par, good enough for second place, while Rodriguez shot a five-over-par.

In the second round, the Tar Heels shot a nine-under-par, which moved them into first place.  The Tar Heels took over first place, while Campbell was in second, just one stroke behind at ten-under-par.

After the third round, North Carolina shot five-under-par to secure the tournament victory for the Tar Heels. Throughout the tournament, the team shot a combined 16-under-par.

Who stood out?

Whaley stood out as the highest finishing golfer all tournament. Whaley started off strong in the first round and never lost her momentum. After a four-under-par finish in the first round, Whaley shot a five-under-par in the second round and three-under-par to close out her competition play for a 12-under-par total for the tournament.

Bryana Nguyen was not far behind Whaley. Nguyen shot two-over-par the first round, a two-under-par in the second round to land tied for sixth place on the leaderboard. She shot a three-under-par in the final round for fifth place.

Brynn Walker also stood out for the Tar Heels. In the first round, Walker shot a 72 par, a one-under-par to move up into a tie for 12th place. A two-over-par performance in the third round solidified a one-over-par total score that kept her in 12th place.

When was it decided?

In the first round, the Tar Heels shot two-under-par and landed second on the team leaderboard behind Campbell.

The tournament was decided after the second round when the Tar Heels shot nine-under-par to propel them into first place with an overall team score of 11-under-par.  The team never looked back and scored five-under-par in the third round. Throughout two days of competition, the teams combined total was 16-under-par.

Why does it matter?

The Briar’s Creek Invitational was the Tar Heels' third tournament in a three-week span and the team's highest finish in the 2017-2018 season so far. The team could build on the strong performance in its next tournament in April, its last of the season before the ACC Championships.

When do they play next?

The Tar Heels will compete next in the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, North Carolina, April 6-8.
