UNC women's tennis shuts out Virginia Tech, 7-0

After falling to No. 6 Georgia Tech on Saturday, the top-ranked North Carolina women’s tennis team (17-2, 6-1 ACC) got another win under its belt, as the Tar Heels shut out Virginia Tech (11-5, 2-5 ACC), 7-0.

What happened?

After a conference loss on Saturday to Georgia Tech, the Tar Heels came out determined  to gain another ACC win over Virginia Tech.

North Carolina quickly proved its dominance during doubles play, as Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham on Court 1, and Alle Sanford and Marika Akkerman on Court Two each defeated Virginia Tech’s doubles teams, 6-3.

After earning the point for a doubles win, the Tar Heels kept pressing during their singles matches. Although there were some rough starts and inconsistent holds of serves for North Carolina throughout the matches, they were ultimately able to win all six of their singles matches.

Who stood out?

The No. 2 ranked doubles team, Aney and Graham, added another win to their record after upsetting the No. 1 ranked doubles team from Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Sanford was also able to claim a singles win. After breaking her Hokie opponent to start off the first set, Sanford was able to win the first set 6-4. Early in the second set Sanford was broken and unable to recover, ultimately losing the second set 6-3. Sanford did not let the loss set her back, though, as she came out strong in the third set tiebreaker, winning it 10-3.

Graham also stood out, as she added another win to her undefeated season. Graham played on Court Three and dominated throughout the match, winning 6-1, 6-3, and earning the first singles win for her team.

When was it decided?

The confident attitudes of the Tar Heels could be felt early in the day after the success in doubles play. This quickly stemmed and continued to grow as each singles player claimed their own win. Starting with Graham, and ending with a tie-breaker win from Sanford, the team was decidedly there to win today from the start.

Why does it matter?

This shutout win for the Tar Heels will help improve the attitudes and confidence of the players following their conference loss to No. 6 Georgia Tech on Saturday and improves their record with seven conference foes ahead.

When do they play next?

The Tar Heels take on Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Thursday, March 29th, at 5 p.m. for another ACC matchup.
