First deaths from Hurricane Florence reported

Hurricane Shelter
The American Red Cross, in partnership with the state of North Carolina, set up a hurricane shelter at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill.

Three people in North Carolina have died as a result of damage done by Hurricane Florence as of Friday afternoon.

The Wilmington Police Department reported two people have died in Wilmington from a collapsed house.

WPD responded to a report of a tree that fell on a house Friday morning. A mother and infant died, and the father was brought to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with injuries.

WWAY also reported Friday afternoon that Pender County Emergency Management has confirmed a woman died in Hampstead due to a heart attack. Emergency crews were unable to get to her because of fallen trees blocking roadways.

Two people have died in Lenoir County. One was a 78-year-old man who was electrocuted when plugging in extension cords during the rain. Another 77-year-old man was blown away by strong winds while checking on his dogs outside.

As Hurricane Florence moves inland, heavy wind, rains and flooding continue to threaten North Carolina.
