A day of shopping or a casual lunch benefited more than just Chapel Hill businesses on Wednesday.

At a Thursday presentation at the Siena Hotel, Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt presented a $4,588 check for Haitian relief efforts to Beth Deacon, director of resource development for the Orange County chapter of the Red Cross.

The Orange Water and Sewer Authority will receive feedback today on the latest version of a plan designed to increase the county’s water supply.

Goals of the Long-Range Water Supply Plan include expanding the size of the Quarry Reservoir, a water source for the county, and drawing up agreements to purchase water from nearby cities to avoid instability in times of drought.

As Masiel Bautista helps tend her family’s plot of basil, parsley and cherry tomatoes, she doesn’t need words to relate to the other gardeners.

Bautista, a McDougle Middle School student, has a grandfather who came from Mexico.

“He liked gardening,” she said. “This is my first gardening experience.”

Tough guys do wear pink, at least in October.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Orange County emergency officials and their emergency vehicles will be decked out in pink.

Workers have gradually gotten used to their new wardrobe.

“They were a little hesitant at first, especially the men,” said Kim Woodward, Orange County Emergency Services spokeswoman. “However, we donned pink and received tremendous support from the emergency department. Now we are overwhelmed by the level of support by our staff.”
