Disclaimer: I don't technically condone illicit drug use.

When it comes to a certain topic, I have two distinct memories: First, learning what "serendipity" meant by studying for a sixth grade vocab quiz. Second, learning what "serendipity" meant first-hand. (For those of you who don't know, think about a time something happened by accident but ended up being something pretty enjoyable.)

Like a certain local business owner can attest, one minor slip-up of accidentally taking 50 doses of hallucinogens can really influence where you'll be going in life for years to come. In my case, I was like 5, thirsty and happened to drink my mom's glass of white zinfandel. While that may not have thrown me into a seven-year stint in hippie counterculture, my roommates and the local Harris Teeter can attest to how else that accident might've influenced me 15 years later.

QUICK HITS

  • Research reports show there's a significant racial disparity in weed-related arrests, especially in Orange County.
  • The artist formerly known as the School of Journalism and Mass Communication celebrated switching over to its new name this weekend. No word on raising classroom temperatures above 45 degrees.
  • Mark Kleinschmidt has some competition this time around in his fourth campaign for mayor — probably in the same way Nicki Minaj had "competition" for Best Hip-Hop Video.

IN CAMPUS NEWS

The discussion around contextualized transcripts is still playing out. In the debate that can only be summarized as "biology majors vs. everyone else," student government plans to organize focus groups to get a better idea about contextualizing grades. They plan to target the groups toward the population whose feedback indisputably matters most in important issues — freshmen.

IN SPORTS

UNC field hockey beat out two teams 2-1 this weekend. The Tar Heels defeated Michigan and Iowa at a challenge in Ann Arbor this weekend. And they left UNC to catch their flight at 4 in the morning. If my lack of athleticism (or my gender) wasn't enough, that departure time obliterated my hopes of joining the team this semester.

IN ENTERTAINMENT

The owner of Oasis regularly performs his experiences of being a hippie for seven years in his one-man show. Robert Roskind tells how he became a hippie and what his ensuing experiences were like. He apparently drank 50 to 100 hits of pure LSD by accident and tripped for three days straight. Relatable stories are always the best stories.

IN OUR OPINION

Orientation is a time to be inclusive and welcoming to students — not to try to sell them stuff. Public sales can emphasize differences for incoming students before they even really get to know anyone — and plus, it's just uncomfortable. Let's stick to what orientation is supposed to be: a welcoming place for you to not get the classes you wanted and be fed the blue Kool-Aid.

IN THE BLOGS

Wanna know what's on Carol Folt's summer playlist? Earlier this month President Obama shared his summer playlists with the world. Obviously, not to be outdone, our chancellor has graced the DTH entertainment blog with her own music choices.
