An open letter to that guy who takes over the music at every party

One of our staff writers just put out a "life hacks" blog on making playlists for parties. And as someone who's seen his unfair share of college galas, I'm a bit of an expert on what works and what doesn't. That and I'm a complete music elitist.

So I'm going to use this space for good today. This is an open letter to that guy who randomly takes over and DJs at every party, regardless of whether he was invited.

1) This isn't your house. Stop that.

2) This unacknowledged trend of putting on "Mr. Brightside" when you run out of songs and need to get all the white people hype again — please. Please, please stop. I promise we like Fergie and Backstreet Boys just as loyally and blindly.

QUICK HITS

  • More than 60,000 UNC applicants from 2014-15 received letters informing them that parts of their applications would be used as evidence in the University's affirmative action lawsuit.
  • The UNC American Indian Center will host its first Native Narrative Tour at 3 p.m. today to share the stories and experiences of American Indians with the campus community.
  • Wake County government employees will get a raise to a living wage starting Dec. 1 — just in time for Christmas, my 21st birthday and my dog's fifth birthday. 'Tis the season.

IN STATE #DRAMA

More than 30 school districts are suing North Carolina for misallocating $46.4 million. And it wasn't even in the sexy way, like a young Roy Cooper sending it to his secret, off-shores account. The money was given to the North Carolina court system, which has a sexiness level on par with a pap smear or Amos from "Chicago."

IN SPORTS

UNC football has a coastal championship in its sights, and Coach Larry Fedora has a questionable taste in metaphors. The full quote I'm referencing is, "Why would we change it? We’re like trained pigs. We’ve got something; we just keep doing it over and over and over." I give up pretending to know what coaches and players are talking about.

IN WOMEN'S HEALTH

Students United for Reproductive Justice hosted an event to share resources and details on how to terminate a pregnancy. The UNC student group aimed to fight the stigma against abortion in North Carolina, especially since the Supreme Court decided to hear an abortion-related case for the first time since 2007. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, save us all.

IN HIGHER EDUCATION

States are exploring options for making college more affordable for nontraditional students. North Carolina is focusing on degrees made from combining community college with online classes. Former Texas governor Rick Perry's plan for $10,000 degrees in his state panned out over the past few years, proving Perry's wild success isn't limited to just the 2012 "Strong" video.

IN THE BLOGS

Parties, and party planning, should be fun. So whatever you do, don't let your music suck. One of our staff writers has graciously offered her pro-tips on choosing songs. Note: Nowhere in her suggestions is "Wagon Wheel," "Bohemian Rhapsody" or your favorite C-list country star or one-hit wonder who's an inside joke with your friends.
