DTH at a Glance

Thank you for a great year and also for not unsubscribing.

In an interview with the DTH, Chancellor Carol Folt highlighted everything she's proud of this year, and with the semester coming to an end, I have to do the same:

Folt said she was proud of the University beginning to confront House Bill 2's effects on students. I'm proud of everything we've done to cover those issues.

She said she's happy with UNC's innovation and efforts launched to confront our racialized history. I'm honored to have been a part of this innovative, ridiculous and mostly over-sharing experiment with y'all over the last nine months.

Folt said she's excited to finally have a female boss for the first time in her life. I can say I'm touched to have been led through this year by Kelsey Weekman, a boss that puts Margaret Spellings to shame. I don't know how I'll be able to follow Kelsey next year, but I'm gonna be trying my best.

See you all back here in the fall.

— Danny

QUICK HITS

  • An in-depth investigation from our reporters and editors found that the University, the Wainstein report and the NCAA are painting pretty different pictures of what went on in UNC's academic-athletic scandal.
  • Travel bans implemented because of House Bill 2 have driven an annual tobacco control research meeting out of UNC and into Missouri this year.
  • Kenan-Flagler is holding its first-ever business school drag show. They're looking for "Best Camp Queen," so bring your best, y'all.
  • UNC's accessibility office got so many requests for alternate accommodations this finals season that it's having to ask faculty to help proctor exams.

IN HONOR COURT

More than half of UNC Honor Court academic cases involve students of color. Fifty-six percent of cases covering things like plagiarism and cheating are centered on non-white students — compared to the 63 percent of UNC's student body that's white.

IN MEMORIAM

After a 20-year reign on campus, The Daily Grind is officially leaving. The beloved coffee shop's contract is set to expire on June 30 as Barnes and Noble takes over running UNC Student Stores.

IN BAR NEWS

There's a tiny pocket of Carolina in D.C., and it's complete with its own He's Not memorabilia. Buffalo Billiards and Ventnor Sports Cafe have both brought in Blue Cups to make a home away from home for the Tar Heels in our nation's capital.

IN MENTAL HEALTH

After a semester of grappling with her mental health, a UNC junior is finally seeing the results of her journey. One of our reporters has been following the progress of an anonymous UNC student — from getting diagnosed to receiving her prescription to applying to medically underload.

IN THE BLOGS

In the words of my dear friend, the student body president of N.C. State's Wolfpack is on the prowl. He sent out an email to the entire student body looking for a date to the commencement dinner. If you want to lower your standards for someone at State, hit him up.
