DTH at a Glance: Veggie-eating outcast edition

I think I was the only kid growing up that liked fruits and vegetables more than hamburgers and ice cream. Like a nerd.

My parents simultaneously loved and hated me for it. While it was nice to be sure I was healthy, knowing their kid was the only idiot on the block who would genuinely enjoy an all-fruit pizza at a birthday party made them wonder if I’d been switched at birth with some child of PETA-pushing parents.

But after all this time, nothing has changed. I haven’t eaten meat in six years, I love my sweet, sweet produce as much as ever, and my Popeye’s chicken-loving family members continue to give me grief-stricken looks across the table at Thanksgiving dinner.

But ya girl won’t change for nobody, especially when I know the Carrboro Farmers’ Market is there to support my veggie needs — and has been for the last 20 years.

QUICK HITS

  • The former director of finance and administration at UNC's Newman Catholic Student Center Parish has been charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from the parish. Holy moly.
  • If the students protesting on Twitter all summer haven't made it abundantly clear already, people are kind of salty about the new Student Stores.
  • If you want to ignore the school-related stress and accompanying existential crisis that is bound to hit you within the next week, Pancakes and Canadian Bacon comedy group can probably help numb the pain.
  • Every human deserves their perfect dog. More importantly, every dog deserves their perfect human. Paws4Ever Animal Sanctuary in Mebane wants to help make that happen.

IN FARMERS' MARKET GOODNESS

The Carrboro Farmers' Market is turning 20 and has definitely aged well. The market has been bringing together the Carrboro community for fresh, local produce and genuine connections for generations, remaining a vital part of the town culture.

IN SUPER-COOL ROBOTS

Ron Alterovitz is building robots to get under our skin. The computer science professor is working on creating devices that can navigate the human body and perform surgeries in a way that's less invasive than traditional surgery.

IN UNC'S PERSONAL #BRAND

Somehow, UNC has managed to increase its school spirit even more. Dorms are being rebranded to embrace school pride and help connect new students to the UNC community. To the hallways decorated like outer space and jungles: You will be sorely missed.
