DTH at a Glance: "I'm not crying; you're crying" edition

In a culture of college and social media and whimsicality, we don't always talk about the tough stuff. Including what can happen when that culture goes a little too far.

On today's front page, my friend Jenni Ciesielski explored student substance abuse through the lens of it being a learning disability — and how it's exacerbated by common campus sentiments. There are facts, arguments and a telling personal experience.

When you get a few minutes on your lunch break today, give it a read.

QUICK HITS

  • A writer for the new "Swerve" section of the website just profiled some top-tier puppeteers — and I'd probably have more to say about it had I not skimmed it because I find puppets unsettling.
  • Campus athletes and Special Olympic athletes are uniting to play one of UNC's newest intramural sports: flag football.
  • UNC volleyball coach Joe Sagula talked with us about the recent defeat of Penn State and how he feels heading into his 26th season.
  • More than 122,000 acres off the coast of Kitty Hawk are to be leased to make way for the state's first offshore wind farm operations.
  • Editor-in-chief Jane Wester and I both fell in love with the DTH and its people three years ago — and now's your chance, too. Applications are due at 4 p.m. tomorrow. Give us a try.

IN CITY NEWS

Local, retired K-9 cops M.J. and Kilo died on the same day last month after also training together when they were pups. Read on about their lives, their love for their handlers and how much they didn't want to retire. Ya know, if you want to feel emotionally crushed in the best possible way.

IN THE DINING HALLS

Top of Lenoir now has a burrito bar — like the beautiful, drugstore-brand Chipotle we don't deserve. Students can also get chips and salsa. And something about more salad or whatever.

IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION

North Carolina's red wolves are probably SOL. Experts say about 40 to 60 pure red wolves are living in the wild, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Red Wolf Recovery Program is now in danger of being axed.

IN HIGHER EDUCATION

According to a recent study, tenure is still further out of reach for female and other underrepresented professors. Also, someone finally explained what tenure is after 21 years of my pretending to understand it.
