DTH at a Glance: 'Mating mathematics' edition

By the end of high school, I was really tired of hearing about how I would use math in the real world. I was in calculus at the time and I wanted nothing less than to revisit those lessons after graduation (shout-out to Mr. Bridges, who probably should have failed me but didn't). Fortunately, I'm a social media manager for a college newspaper and I fulfilled my math requirements with computer science and public opinion polls, so that saying hasn't rung true yet.

But I might want to revisit the concept now that professor Hannah Fry has figured out a formula for love. It might be a little bit simplistic, but she says that love, like math, is ultimately just a study of patterns. Statistically speaking, the equation can't really hurt my nonexistent love life ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

QUICK HITS

  • The Lumbee Indian tribe has sought federal recognition for more than 100 years. A bill asking for recognition once more is currently being considered by the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.
  • UNC students and faculty can now use Adobe's Creative Cloud, which includes products like Photoshop and Premiere, for free. Teachers have to apply for a license and explain how they plan to use the software in their classes.
  • Raleigh Beer Week is currently on tap — but Orange County breweries think the bar should be raised for a Chapel Hill and Carrboro festival.

IN FAITH-BASED FOOD FUNDRAISING

This November will mark the 28th annual RSVVP (which bizarrely stands for Restaurants Sharing Ten Percent — yay, Roman numerals). The event, which is a collaboration between Orange County's restaurants and Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, has raised almost $500,000 for the IFC's hunger relief programs.

IN RUNNING ON EMPTY

North Carolina is experiencing a gas shortage due to an Alabama pipeline spill, but supplies should be flowing again soon. Gas station managers in the area have said customers have been understanding about the situation, which is doing wonders for my faith in humanity.

IN BUSINESS BILLS

The Student Fee Audit Committee has voted against an extra price tag for UNC business majors. The fee, proposed by Kenan-Flagler Business School, would cost majors an extra $3,000 by 2019-2020 and would be used to increase resources and enrollment.
