DTH at a Glance: How do adults make friends

I spent summer 2K16 interning in Boston. I moved there knowing no one and spent a lot of time exploring the city on my own, which sounds like the premise for a cool indie rom-com. Unfortunately, there was plenty of independence but a severe lack of romance and comedy.

One would’ve expected it to be a time of intense self-discovery and enlightenment, but after two months the only conclusion I came to was this: I have no clue how adults make friends in the real world.

As a ~millennial~, I obviously have no in-person social skills, and as an ~underage individual~, I have no ability to form accidental friendships through drunken bar conversations. So, when my time to start in a new city as an official adult arrives, where am I to turn?

Apparently, Bumble BFF, a new app tested and proven effective by one of our writers. To you, friendship pioneer: Thank you for saving me from the horrors of social interaction — my strolls along the Boston Harbor will be complete because of you.

QUICK HITS

  • Exoneration rates are on the rise in the United States. Wrongly convicted prisoners, some of whom have been imprisoned for over 20 years, are being proven innocent and freed at last.
  • An ad by Pat McCrory paints a rosy picture of teacher salaries, but Roy Cooper’s ad featuring North Carolina educators tells another story entirely.
  • The Muslim Students Association, LGBTQ Center and several other student organizations co-hosted an Art and Welcoming Night, which was inspired by an event at Duke following the Orlando shooting at Pulse nightclub earlier this year.

IN SERVING THOSE WHO SERVED OUR COUNTRY

A new space for student veterans will be introduced to Odum Village during the 2017-18 school year. The new $750,000 housing arrangement will provide a place for veterans to work with and support one another in their lives post-military.

IN TRAFFIC TROUBLE

Deaths from traffic accidents have increased both in North Carolina and nationwide. In response to a 7.4 increase in incidents between 2014-15, the White House, the Department of Transportation and the NHTSA issued a call to action to reduce the fatality rates.

IN CREATING A SAFER COMMUNITY

A town hall meeting was held on Tuesday to discuss police brutality and campus safety. The event brought together students, Chapel Hill police officers and UNC administrators to start a dialogue about this summer’s controversial attacks on both people of color and police officers.

IN FINALLY UNDERSTANDING SPORTBALL

This week, we released Film Review, a new series that will break down exactly what’s happening on the football field. Aka, after 19 years of life I may finally be able to decipher why my father is yelling at the television screen.
