DTH at a Glance: Post-hurricane edition

Sometimes, life in Chapel Hill gets a bit boring. So when crazy things like Hurricane Matthew head our way, I admittedly get a little excited that things are going to get mixed up.

But honestly? Life in the Triangle this weekend pretty much went on as planned. Power on campus stayed flowing. Chance the Rapper performed in Raleigh. Considering the damage that was done in some other areas, I felt like a brat lying in bed and pretending that wind and rain genuinely affected my ability to do homework.

The storm didn’t even stop anyone from going to the dining halls. No matter how bad Mother Nature thinks she is, apparently UNC students are badder when Lenoir cookies are involved.

QUICK HITS

  • Pat McCrory’s legislation has negatively affected his gubernatorial campaign, with his views on the economy and teacher salaries being overshadowed by his implementation of HB2.
  • This December, UNC is upgrading to a more user-friendly version of Sakai that’ll hopefully make doing homework at least a little less annoying.
  • A UNC professor is examining the relationship between literature and illness by creating interdisciplinary health-humanities classes.
  • Last night was the second presidential debate. Trump and Clinton talked taxes and the treatment of Muslim-Americans. The night ended with the two candidates being forced by an audience member to compliment each other, which was 100 percent as awkward as it sounds.

IN BEING BLOWN AWAY

If you didn’t notice, an enormous hurricane hit North Carolina this weekend. While UNC wasn’t hit as hard as other schools in the state (as in, people were still going to the library and ordering pizzas), Chapel Hill did experience some flooding and power outages, and 12 people were displaced overnight.

IN COURT CASES

Chandler Kania's friends appeared in court to testify about the events preceding Kania’s crash last July. According to testimony, the night involved wine, marijuana and an argument that ended in Kania driving away. Authorities say the former UNC student was driving drunk down the wrong side of the highway before being involved in a crash that killed three.

IN HAPPY PUPPIES AND GOOD BEER

Dingo Dog Brewing Company donates all proceeds to no-kill animal shelters and animal rights advocacy groups. After years of brewing experience, Mississippi-born Tim Schwarzauer is opening a brewery right outside Carrboro that will bring and money to animal shelters. Schwarzauer says he hopes to find a taproom location where they can have a green, fenced space for dogs to run and play while owners enjoy socializing. Essentially, he is constructing heaven.

IN COCOA BUTTER KISSES

Through falling in love for the first time to smoking at lame high school parties, Chance the Rapper has always been there. For one writer, in particular, he has inspired emotions she didn’t think she could experience and has been there for her during the most difficult times of her life. Then, he performed in Raleigh on Friday night, and by pure chance, a friend had an extra ticket. (Spoiler alert: She absolutely lived.)
