DTH at a Glance

DTH at a Glance: Virginia's for shaders

Among the many big decisions you'll be facing on Nov. 8, Orange County is asking you to vote on two bond referendums. One is proposing $120 million for local schools, as locals cite overcrowding, aging facilities and underfunding for repairs and renovations.

Hearing that might sound a little worrisome, but I just need y'all to know: The place I lived last summer had such bad budget issues that the city literally said "screw it" and stopped mowing public properties so it could send money to causes like public schools.

So I know things might seem a little concerning leading up to this referendum and election, and the grass might always seem a little greener elsewhere.

But remember: At least we're not Richmond.

QUICK HITS

  • Hey, you. If you've got five minutes, take our reader survey on how DTH at a Glance is doing. Are you in love with Glance and think Rachel and Tiana deserve raises? Do you not really care? Do you think we're the sole reason for the downfall of modern journalism? We want to know it all.
  • With help from sophomore forward Nils Bruening, UNC men's soccer landed a 2-1 win against Duke at Duke's stadium that has a made-up name.
  • Saturday Night Live just turned Melania Trump into BeyoncĂ© Knowles, and I think I might be here for it…?
  • UNC's Student Fee Advisory Subcommittee decided on Friday to send back the proposed business school fee to be revised.
  • One of our editors somehow strong-armed her pop culture-holdout writer into watching "Mean Girls" for the first time. I think she hated it, but, you know, one step at a time.

IN CAMPUS DISPARITIES

With the computer science department hovering at about 20 percent female, UNC can experience some big gaps in gender, racial and ethnic diversity. Which doesn't really come as a surprise to anyone who's ever stepped foot in the journalism school.

IN UNC BASKETBALL

Late Night with Roy was lit on Friday, per usual. The first-years for men's basketball slayed during the Blue-White scrimmage. Joel Berry can't dance. UNC has a player whose first name is "Seventh." I am READY.

IN FUN AND GAMES

UNC students have joined in on game-ified seeing for dogs in public, because of course they have. The "Dogspotting @ UNC" Facebook group has 500 members, and they will shamelessly take creeper shots of your dog in public.

IN CHARITABLE EXERCISE

Chapel Hillians who are far more athletic than I ever will be carried five-gallon jugs of water for half of a 6K on Saturday. They were part of the first ever Lug-a-Jug 6K, aimed at raising awareness for people across the globe who don't have access to clean water.
