DTH at a Glance: A cinematic slam-dunk

I wish I could be a film junkie. I really do.

I want to act like I’m paying attention to foreign films. I want to wear a beret and talk with my other pretentious art friends about how the metaphors for love and loss were so blasé. But honestly, I’d rather watch “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” sixteen times in a row than sit around, sip bad red wine and pretend like I really give two hecks about Rotten Tomatoes’ boring opinion.

That being said: “Space Jam” turns 20 years old today and I’m ready as heck to celebrate this world’s No. 1 cinematic slam-dunk.

QUICK HITS

  • Many women are concerned about the accessibility of birth control options after President-elect Donald Trump promised to do away with the Affordable Care Act.
  • Students from a UNC biology class are working hard to bring in more platelet donors by clearing up the difference between platelet donation and regular blood donation.
  • N.C. Rep. Graig Meyers met with the League of Women Voters of Orange, Durham and Chatham counties on Monday to address the fear felt by many members following last Tuesday’s election.
  • We asked UNC students what they thought of a new exhibition explaining Carolina Hall’s racially-charged history and controversial renaming.

IN A BREAKOUT OF BREAK-INS

Chapel Hill has recently seen a huge increase in car break-ins. Since Nov. 1, the Chapel Hill Police Department has responded to more than 22 incidents, some of which may have been committed by the same person. Authorities are now warning residents to remember to lock their cars and keep valuables hidden. Better to be safe than sorry, even if you just do the thing where you throw your coat over your backpack in the front seat, I say.

IN A TRASH-FREE UNC

One student’s new initiative aims to keep UNC’s campus from going to waste. Trash-Free-UNC, spearheaded by sophomore Olivia Joyner, challenges students to reduce the amount of waste they create by refraining from using disposable items for a week straight. She was inspired after seeing the documentary “No Impact Man,” as well as by the overflowing garbage cans outside the UL and Davis Library. The only trash that should be hanging out on campus every night should be me, y’all.

IN NEW LIFES AND NEW LANGUAGES

A campus organization is helping over 200 immigrants and refugees learn English for free. Enrich ELL, a student-run group on campus, teaches adults English geared towards life in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community. However, with rent costs rising at their primary location of Carrboro Elementary School, the group is on the hunt for new ways of funding to keep the program alive.

IN MICHAEL JORDAN’S TRUE LEGACY

MJ’s basketball skills at UNC made him the best, and yet somehow "Space Jam" made him even better. As the movie celebrates two decades of basketball-y goodness, we celebrate it by reminiscing on the film, what it’s meant to us and our families, and also by watching it while really, really drunk.
