DTH at a Glance: Dining death match

Tupac and Biggie. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. France and England. Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez. UNC and dook. Our society is built on rivalries — whether it's over a petty subtweet or a literal war, conflict between two parties keeps our attention 24/7. And now another iconic rivalry has entered the fray: Top of Lenoir versus Rams Head.

If you've had a meal at either establishment, I guarantee that you have a Lot of Opinions™ on which one is better. As somebody who's spent a lot of time eating alone in both (shoutout to the Netflix and cry seshes of my first year) I know I do. However, in the interest of journalistic impartiality, I'll let you read our King of the Hill series and decide for yourself. Whether you rep for the friendly atmosphere of Rams or the variety of Lenoir, there's some food for thought on either side of the debate.

QUICK HITS

  • Athletes — they're just like us, except when they're not. We spoke with several UNC student-athletes to see how their star power affects them off the court.
  • UNC Student Stores is making bank for the University post-Barnes & Noble takeover. Between a $1 million signing bonus for UNC and a guaranteed $3 million a year for the next two years, privatization has made for booming business.
  • UNC football will take on The Citadel this Saturday in a bizarrely even matchup given each school's conference status. One of the only things I know about The Citadel is that it's Frank Underwood's fictional alma mater, so I'm already terrified going into this game.
  • In "local to this social media manager" news, it's my way or the highway! N.C. lawmakers are petitioning for Greenville's section of Highway 264 to become federally designated and be considered as an interstate in the future.

IN FOCKEY FINALS

In case you didn't know, UNC is pretty good at sports. This is especially true for our club and varsity field hockey teams, who are respectively headed to the National Championships and Final Four this weekend. Goalie Shannon Johnson is looking to break a three-year losing streak at the Final Four for the varsity team, while club field hockey reflects on the tumultuous season that got them to Virginia Beach.

Friends' Cafe is making its drinks extra sweet one day out of the week. The Health Sciences Library institution is donating 10 percent of its profits to charity each Friday and plans to continue doing so until at least the end of the year. Today's sales will go toward the Southern Poverty Law Center, and cafe owner Simon McGorman is open to hear suggestions for future donations.

The Orange County Department on Aging's Program EngAGE  is slaying the game. They held an open-mic community discussion on Thursday to open a dialogue on death and how to honor the last wishes of loved ones. Volunteers shared stories of their experiences with death to help the department gather information on how to best assist residents as they dealt with the aftermath left by the afterlife.
