DTH at a Glance: My backpack and I both just gained five pounds

Well, I just gained five pounds in three days of being home, so you know what that means, folks: It’s officially the holiday season.

Most students we spoke to had fun and food-filled breaks, which was nice to hear since the holidays seem to have a tendency of getting more and more stressful the older you get. When you’re a kid, post-Thanksgiving break life means teachers get lazy and give you busy work until you get out before winter break. When you’re a college student, it means all your professors gather together and plot to cram a year’s worth of work into the last two weeks so they can brew hot chocolate made from your tears at the office Christmas party.

So, kids, gather 'round and listen as we share tales of end-of-semester woes. The Christmas tree on Franklin Street may finally be lit, but our December social lives almost certainly will not be. :')

QUICK HITS

  • OK, ladies, now let’s get in formation. North Carolina saw an increase in female representation in Fortune 1000 companies this year, but the state is still below the national average.
  • For the second year in a row, North Carolina earned the No. 2 spot on Forbes’ Best States for Business rankings, but the passage of HB2 has dampened the state’s reputation in terms of upward mobility.
  • Grad students at Duke have filed a petition for unionization after a ruling earlier this year said students at private universities could be considered employees of their schools.
  • The overall child mortality rate in North Carolina has remained fairly stagnant the past few years, despite efforts by the N.C. Child Fatality Task Force.

IN SAYING GOODBYE

“I don’t regret anything,” said wide receiver Ryan Switzer following his final game in Kenan Stadium this past weekend. Despite UNC football’s fall to N.C. State — an especially hard loss for fans and players alike — the UNC senior went out with a bang, tying for fifth in UNC history for number of career touchdowns and securing the UNC single-season receptions record in the final minutes of the third quarter.

IN GETTING LIT

A crowd of about 100 gathered in the Memorial Garden of University Baptist Church for the annual tree lighting Sunday night. As eighth grader Franklin Kennedy performed “The First Noel,” residents of Chapel Hill came together for the 10th year in a row to welcome the Christmas season with caroling, hot chocolate and a special appearance by the one and only Santa Claus.

IN DECKING THE (RESIDENCE) HALLS

Swerve is already in the holiday spirit. Also, they want to procrastinate studying for finals. Let them help you do the same as they show off some of the best ways to use string lights, garland and wrapping paper to decorate your dorm room for the holidays.
