DTH at a Glance: Coaches who care

Here's a fun fact that I forget a lot: I played soccer in high school. For two whole years. On the rare occasion I made it on the field, I was a winger; normally I rode the bench. I was really good at this — I talked my teammates through injuries, bad ref calls and the regular heartaches of high school.

I barely touched the field, but I think I could still relate to the champions that Anson Dorrance has coached in his decade-spanning reign over UNC's women's soccer. My coach knew I wasn't a soccer player (and I knew I wasn't a soccer player — I joined the team because one of my best friends was a captain and I wanted something to do when tennis season ended). But he was still incredibly involved in my life on and off the field, and only kind of because he was also my biology teacher. The best coaches care for their players, and though that didn't make us winners in the same sense as Mia Hamm (whose jersey number I proudly shared), it made us feel like we were.

QUICK HITS

  • Gov. Pat McCrory declared a State of Emergency in 25 counties as droughts and wildfires in Western North Carolina rage on.
  • On the other side of the state, communities are still recovering from Hurricane Matthew. We talked to students who faced catastrophic losses and some students helping them recover.
  • The No. 4 UNC field hockey team is flying blind in Saturday's ACC tournament matchup against No. 12 Stanford. The last time the Heels faced the Cardinals was in 2012 — fortunately they beat Stanford twice that year.
  • International students at UNC are seriously worried in the face of a Trump presidency. However, the International Student and Scholar Services office is continuing with business as usual.

IN ESCAPISM?

There's plenty to do this weekend for UNC's musically inclined students: Pauper Players' production of the politically tumultuous musical "Cabaret" opens tonight, and the cast is thrilled to convey the relevance of the story, which is set in 1930s Germany. If the 21st century is more your speed, a cappella group Harmonyx is staging its own version of BeyoncĂ©'s visual album "Lemonade." They're covering the twelve themes of the album, in addition to hits by Lauryn Hill, Rihanna, The Weeknd and Drake.

IN MINHAJ MANIA

Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj is coming to campus on Saturday for an event hosted by the Muslim Student Association and CUAB. The event, which has been in the works since June, will be especially timely after Tuesday's election — Minhaj has made a name for himself through standup focusing on Muslim and minority issues. To prepare, we looked back at some of his best comedic moments.

IN PREGAMING

It's the most wonderful time of the year in Chapel Hill. The UNC men's basketball team takes on Tulane tonight in its first regular season game. To prepare, we've put together a guide to the 2016 season: see who's slated to fill the shoes left by Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige, what Theo Pinson's injury means for the team and the expectations for the women's team.
