DTH at a Glance: Pies wide open

Y'all, I'm ready for Thanksgiving. I've been home precisely once since school started. I'm tired and I look tired (a fact which has been confirmed for me by at least three of my writers). But mostly, I miss my mom's pie.

It's not technically hers. She got the recipe from my great-great-grandma Madeline after she died — the women in my family sorted through her recipes like the women stealing Scrooge's clothes in the future scene of "A Christmas Carol." But because my mom married into that side of the family, they left two ingredients off the recipe. She spent 10 years trying to figure out what was missing, and when she finally did — magic. I know for a fact that fudge pie would beat any and all contenders in the Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market competition. I still 100 percent regret not attending, though.

QUICK HITS (AKA SPORTS)

  • UNC's field hockey team lost the National Championship game to Delaware 3-2. They've gone to the Final Four eight years in a row, with their last championship win being in 2009.
  • Junior Taylor Fricano's shaky serve ended up being a blessing in disguise on Friday night. The volleyball team won 3-0 against the Virginia after Fricano threw off the Cavaliers' rhythm.
  • UNC wrestling fought its way to a respectably close loss against Old Dominion, showing major improvement from their last matchup.
  • The women's basketball team staged a major comeback against Bucknell, rebounding from a weak first half to win 65-50.

IN FETZER, FOR THE LAST TIME

Fetzer Stadium went out on a high note last night. Both the women's and men's soccer teams played and won their final games on Fetzer before the stadium is renovated to accommodate the four teams that use the field. Underclassmen were the real MVPs of the women's soccer team's wins against Clemson and Kansas this weekend. The Tar Heels will advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 2013. The men's soccer team also celebrated a victory last night. They won 3-2 against Florida Gulf Coast in double overtime to advance to the Round of 16.

IN STRATEGIC BOARDS

The Board of Governors is focusing on following Margaret Spellings' ascension to system president. A study conducted in the early days of her reign pointed out a lack of strategic focus among administration, faculty, staff and students. The board has now drafted a plan of five points to help the system tighten up, with plans to revise and finalize the plans in January.

IN FILM!

In case you've been living under a rock for the past year, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" came out this weekend. As a Gryffindor, I'm not thrilled about the focus on other houses because I've gotten pretty used to my merchandise/recognition privilege, but fortunately the writer we sent to review the film is a Hufflepuff and she loved it. In slightly more nostalgic nerd news, "Spirited Away" is turning 15! Another writer (a Ravenclaw, not that it matters) explained why the film is such a classic.
