DTH at a Glance: This is like a message in a bottle

I want my readers to know me more personally, so today I’m answering the ultimate icebreaker: “If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only bring three items, what would they be?”

Because I’m a Virgo, you’d think I’d be practical in making this vital decision. But really, I would end up bringing a romance novel, a big bag of pretzels and one of those little electric spinny fans with a spray bottle attachment you got from Disney World as a kid.

Lucky for me, a North Carolina startup just created a buoy that turns seawater into drinking water, so I bet I could just wait for one of those to float along. Then I would only have to worry about one other thing: making sure the island had Wi-Fi.

QUICK HITS

  • Two UNC students hope to combat sexual assault by developing an app in which students can record places they were sexually assaulted and report incidents to police.
  • Ghouls, goblins and ghosts weren’t the only scary thing out on Halloween: 605 people were arrested for driving while impaired this year.
  • Dance company Modernextension seeks not only those with a background in dance, but also those who feel comfortable, creative and confident in letting music carry them away.
  • Last week, eight states voted in favor of the legalization of marijuana. 11/08, blaze it.

IN BEING ACCOMPLISHED AS HECK

A student from East Chapel Hill High School is going to Carnegie Hall. Sophomore flutist Cecilia Lee was one of few selected from a pool of 18,000 students to perform at an event in New York City celebrating the world’s most talented young musicians. That feeling when somebody much younger than you has accomplished more in 15 or 16 years than you will in your entire life. :’)

IN BEING SALTY

OH BUOY! North Carolina startup EcoH20 Innovations is the first to create a buoy that turns seawater into drinking water. The device, which is currently designed to work in 2-foot waves, extracts the salt from the ocean water using a process called reverse osmosis, making it safe to drink. So if you ever get stranded at sea, you’d better hope that these guys are with you.

IN BEING OUT

Shortly before the election, N.C. Rep. Cecil Brockman came out as bisexual. The Democrat from Guilford County was inspired to be open about his sexuality after the retirement of Rep. Chris Sgro, an openly LGBTQ rep in the General Assembly. We sat down with him to discuss coming out, President-elect Trump and LGBTQ rights in the North Carolina.

IN DEER WHISPERING

Earlier this week, we talked about a deer taking a swim in Woollen Gym; today we talked to an internet-famous deer whisperer. Kelvin Peña, known on Twitter as @COLDGAMEKELV, became famous online after recording his friendship with a deer he named Money. We caught up with him to talk about his college life, charity work and what it’s like to be a meme.
