DTH at a Glance: Running this game for 3 years

Good morning, and welcome to the 26 of you who joined us this week because I just discovered the magic of reading newsletter analytics!

Now that we're solidly into the semester (1.5 days), it's time to celebrate an anniversary: It's officially been three years since I joined The Daily Tar Heel, and we're now taking applications for the spring semester! No experience necessary — the only requirement is that you're an undergrad or grad student.

If you're interested, you can find our Facebook event and application online. Apps are due Jan. 20 at 4 p.m., and we'll have an interest meeting at our office at 5:30 on Tuesday.

See y'all there.

QUICK HITS

  • Thanks to a Sakai update on Dec. 20, every UNC student's favorite user interface has officially entered the year 2008.
  • President-elect Donald Trump gave his first press conference in six months Wednesday in Manhattan. Here are five key takeaways, including his relations with Russia and how garbage and fake CNN is.
  • McAlister's, Jasmin Bistro and Khushi Salads and Wraps are all closing their doors — partly because there's a natural ebb and flow of businesses and mostly because the unwavering force of cosmic justice understands that salad-based restaurants are an abomination.

IN DAILY CRIME

Someone vandalized the Fordham Boulevard Red Roof Inn "with a blunt object." Another person broke into a car and stole someone's Macbook, Fitbit and Apple Watch. See the rest of the police blotter here.

IN MEMORIAM

Oliver Smithies, UNC’s first Nobel Prize-winning full-time faculty member, died at 91 on Jan. 10. He, along with his wife who is currently a professor in the School of Medicine, had been on faculty since 1988.

IN NEW BARS

Wilmington-based Might as Well Bar and Grill is coming to West Franklin Street, and it's planning hella parties. The owner said to expect festivities for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and UNC game days. They're hoping to open up shop the week of Jan. 22.

IN NEWS

An estimated seven out of 10 sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows — and for some people, that includes their doctors. Several medical professionals in North Carolina have been accused of or charged with sexual crimes in recent years. But advocates say it's difficult to know if your doctor has had allegations against them unless action has been taken.
