DTH at a Glance: Your word is 'apiculture'

Good morning, and happy Friday the 13th!

If you're needing a pick-me-up at the end of a long week, I have a fun fact to make you feel better about yourself and also introduce some new research from N.C. A&T that might solve peanut allergies. For the first 21 years of my life, I managed to make it through without any food allergies, unless you count penicillin as food. All of that came to a screeching halt last semester, about 45 minutes into an otherwise cute excursion with a boy in downtown Durham when I got brave and tried date-flavored gelato for the first time.

I had an allergic reaction and pretended it wasn't happening for almost two hours until I was back at my house. Which is is the story of how I found out I am technically literally allergic to dates.

QUICK HITS

  • T-minus seven days until applications to join the DTH are due for spring semester! Tell your friends; tell your children. Tell your friends' children. Etc.
  • Here's what you need to watch out for as UNC men's basketball takes on Florida State on Saturday. Or at least here's a list of talking points to use so no one knows you don't know anything about sports.
  • Yesterday a judge scheduled a motions hearing for Jan. 31 in Craig Stephen Hicks' death penalty case. Hicks is charged with the murder of Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha and Razan Abu-Salha on Feb. 10, 2015.
  • Snow and ice are a pain for everyone, but they can especially be a concern for students who use wheelchairs, crutches and other tools to navigate campus.

IN WEEKEND PLANS

Well$ and another rapper who subtweeted our Swerve director last year are performing at Cat's Cradle this weekend! That rapper is Waka Flocka Flame, and the tweet is here.

IN TYPICAL CHAPEL HILL

Some of the town's previously monochromatic crosswalks just got a little dragged up. Five have been chosen to receive makeovers in hopes that the paint jobs will boost pedestrian visibility (and probably Chapel Hill's Tumblr aesthetic).

IN PROOF THAT THERE'S A STUDENT GROUP FOR ACTUALLY EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN

Meet Nissa Coit and Marc Brunton, some of the first members of the formally recognized Carolina Beekeeping ClubThe group doesn't have any bees yet, but they're hoping to obtain a hive come spring and possibly sell honey in the future.

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Gov. Roy Cooper announced on Jan. 6 his plan to expand Medicaid coverage to more than 500,000 people in North Carolina, despite state law requiring legislative approval to do so. Because, you know, he does what he wants.
