DTH at a Glance: Satirical buybacks

Good morning! As most of you have heard from previous newsletters, my social life last summer is best described by my favorite compound adjective, "good-not-great."

I worked a copy editor schedule while all the other interns worked 9 to 5, so I got to go out with my co-workers exactly once — to a Prohibition-themed speak-easy, like the one that just opened near the intersection of Merritt Mill Road and East Main Street in Carrboro.

Upon walking up in downtown Richmond, the group of us entered a room that was about 15 feet by 15 feet and covered wall-to-wall in bookshelves. Someone sitting at a front desk continually played dumb and asked if we needed help looking for anything — until we figured out we needed a "password" from their Facebook before they'd open a secret door to let us back to the bar.

After working in a newsroom covering the 2016 election for eight hours straight, that was some role-play BS up with which I will not put, and I never went back. I have much more hope for the one in Carrboro.

QUICK HITS

  • Be sure to come out to The Daily Tar Heel's conference for our 2017 alumni weekend! Tickets are available now; mark your calendars for Feb. 17 and 18.
  • N.C. State's University's Counseling Center recently won an Emmy for its #StopTheStigma video raising awareness for suicide prevention.
  • Since President Trump signed off on the immigration ban, donations and volunteer offers have surged for refugee-focused charities in the Triangle.
  • Chapel Hill police saw a substantial spike in vehicle break-ins for January compared to recent years — from the normal 15 or 20 up to this year's 51.

IN DAILY CRIME

There were two people reported for vandalism and damage to property in the last couple days. One removed magnets from someone's car and wedged the lid of a can under one of the tires. One threw a brick through a back windshield.

IN CAMPUS ALERTS

If you've ever wondered why Alert Carolina only sends you texts in some situations, here's why. Officials factor in threat level and proximity to campus when deciding whether to send an email, text or both — and (surprisingly), outside experts say Alert Carolina does a pretty good job at it.

IN PETTY NEWS

A satirical GoFundMe page is trying to "buy" back Sen. Richard Burr, from campaign donations of Betsy DeVos. The page's creators said any money raised by their protest of DeVos' nomination will be donated to the N.C. Public School Forum.

IN DISAPPOINTMENTS

In honor of the upcoming game, Swerve compiled a list of fictional villains who most definitely went to Duke. Because, you know, real-life Richard Spencer wasn't enough.
