DTH at a Glance: Petition to ban the film 'Gattaca'

Good morning!

In the past, I've talked about my experience in AP environmental science my senior year of high school. We watched "Gattaca" at least four times. My teacher taught us how to Dougie when we all did well on a quiz.

We also spent most of springtime in the woods behind our the soccer field, taking "water samples" and looking for signs of pollution. One time one of my classmates found a live snake and was given extra credit for bringing it back to show the teacher. It was A Lot, and looking back on it I think we might've been part of the academic-athletic scandal.

But at UNC, students are actually kind of useful in their efforts to clean local streams. We sat down with Haley Moser — who interns at the UNC Department of Environment, Health and Safety — to talk about her environmental efforts and why streams are important.

QUICK HITS

  • Hundreds of people turned out in Raleigh in support of science and its role in public policy Saturday. My personal favorite sign: this 8-year-old who wants to be Jane Goodall.
  • A new bill proposed by Republicans in the General Assembly would, among other things, give undocumented immigrants with limited IDs in North Carolina.
  • UNC history faculty are saying they believe the College of Arts and Sciences canceled a class by Jay Smith to prevent students from learning about the academic-athletic scandal.

IN DAILY CRIME

Someone reported harassment on Thursday after ex-roommates allegedly threw their belongings outside. Another person reported a diseased raccoon on Brookgreen Drive.

IN STUDENT LIFE

The Clef Hangers, an a cappella group I can't make jokes about because I have too many acquaintances in it, just dropped its newest album. "Fixate" can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and Amazon Music.

IN SPORTS RECORDS

Senior Hayley Carter spent Saturday shattering the all-time ACC singles record after a win for UNC women's tennis. I spent my Saturday doing seven loads of laundry and watching gay "Jersey Shore."

IN OUR OPINION

The University should push to add gender neutrality into more of its curriculums. Especially in foreign language classes — where I didn't learn of the existence of gender-neutral options until my fifth year of public school Spanish.

IN YOUR OPINION

A letter-writer from Austin,Texas basically said the students spray-painting Silent Sam aren't real protesters accomplishing anything. OK, so his exact words were, "You have not made a statement that couldn’t have been made by a stoned middle schooler." But I wanted to ease into that a little bit.
