DTH at a Glance: The day after the day after Halloween

Happy Thursday, everybody! Here's the news from Day Two of listening to pure, unadulterated Mariah Carey on repeat:

QUICK HITS

  • Two North Carolina women's basketball first-years stole the show in an 84-62 exhibition win against Wingate on Wednesday night in Carmichael Arena.
  • Chapel Hill's housing code limits the number of unrelated people who reside in a single dwelling to four, creating issues for students and landlords alike.
  • Related news: if you're a student with legal issues, Carolina Student Legal Services has got you covered. "We try to meet that need for students and remove the stress of the legal situation from them and do as much as we can to help.”

MONEY MOVES

  • Nationally, Latinas make 54 cents per a white, non-hispanic man’s dollar. Through Latina Equal Pay Day, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement is trying to change that.
  • “By empowering one woman to have a company, she could go and employ so many women, and entire communities could end up shifting.” Youth ambassador Isabel Whelchel is raising funds to help female entrepreneurs succeed in Latin America.
  • Are you tired of not being paid for internships? Does your resume essentially look like a blank piece of paper? Do you want to make contacts in your field but do not know how to? Clemson University has a program for that — and it's a possibility for UNC as well.

GOT QUESTIONS? WE HAVE ANSWERS

  • "I’ll never forget it — it was a deeply emotional situation for me because I had voted to send her husband to war." U.S. Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., sends condolence letters to the families of soldiers killed in the Middle East.
  • We talked to former newspaper editor and current professor John Robinson about different perspectives, real-life experience and new-age journalism.
  • Take a break from your Christmas music to hear what southern folk band Dissimilar South is cooking at Local 506 with Pretend Chess this Friday.
  • "But that’s just the way I see things. I don’t believe you should discriminate against anyone for any reason unless they’re hurting people." Bill Smith Jr., the head chef at Crook's Corner, is signing on to a "friend of the court" brief for the Supreme Court case about a Colorado bakery's refusal to serve a same-sex couple.
