DTH at a Glance: Schools and rules

We hope you survived your first day back at UNC! As you brace for day two, check out the news:

QUICK HITS

  • From dating apps to flirting to hooking up, today’s dating scene is complicated. Most fantasies of finding “the one” in college don't come true, but dating in college is still worth it according to students.
  • Following the Parkland, Fla. shooting, the Orange County Sheriff’s office and Orange County Schools are working together to reassess school safety protocols, create a new training program for school resource officers and hire younger officers.
  • UNC's wrestling team tied up its 9-11 season with some of its best achievements since 1995, including its best NCAA finish since that year and two All-Americans.

ACROSS CAMPUSES

  • Yesterday, the Faculty Executive Committee met to consider implementing free speech principles modeled after The University of Chicago’s policies. However, committee members are worried the move might be politicized.
  • If you were planning on studying politics or majoring in a language, you might not want to apply to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The school is considering replacing 16 programs, ranging from American studies and political science to German and Spanish.
  • The Department of Education has determined many of UC-Berkeley’s policies for dealing with professor-on-student allegations of sexual violence and harassment violate Title IX, including the statute that allegations must be resolved within three years. For context, UNC requires the report to be assessed within 55 days of filing.
