DTH at a Glance: Cyclorama

Good Morning and Happy Pre-Friday!

Every state/city/school system has THAT field trip. The one every kid has been on. I don't know what it is for y'all native Carolinians, but for an Atlanta Public Schools student, that trip was Cyclorama.

What is Cyclorama? Buckle. Your. Seat belts. Cyclorama is a 42-foot-tall painting of the Battle of Atlanta. It has a circumference of 358 feet and is the largest painting in the United States.

Circumference? Oh yes my friends, this giant art piece covers the walls of a circular room lined with 128 plaster figurines and set pieces in front of the painting to create a giant diorama.

How do you view such an impressive scene? That is where the "cyclo" in Cyclorama comes in. You sit in stadium-style seating in the center of the room which then turns at .00002 mph leaving every fifth grader bored to tears.

This tale does not lead into a story. I just needed more people to know of its existence. Because it takes years to appreciate the Cyclorama for what it truly is, a gift. If you're into history, check our our throwback stories below.

The Rundown

The Wayback Machine

  • June 17, 1971- The DTH summer staff of yesteryear was present for the opening of Boshamer Stadium. They won their first game of the season.

  • April 28, 1951- In case you didn't see this on the UNC archives Twitter, the DTH issued a very interesting challenge to its readers. Who thinks we should bring this back?
