Once a momma's boy, always a momma's boy

North Carolina punter Corbin Daly, a redshirt freshman, wrecked his bicycle in seventh grade, leaving him with a serious brain injury and no way to ever play contact sports again. So Daly and his mom, who raised him as a single parent, looked into another option — Daly could play football as a kicker or punter.

Now, entering the 2015 season, Daly is listed as the Tar Heels' starting punter.

UNC women's soccer 'in a wonderful position'

The North Carolina women's soccer team opens its 2015 season on Friday night at Fetzer Field against Weber State. To address the scoring woes of a season ago, Coach Anson Dorrance has tinkered with the Tar Heels' starting lineup during the offseason.

“We’re taking a bit of a risk to throw these talented kids forward,” Dorrance said. “But hopefully what we’ll gain is the capacity to score some goals.”

Looking ahead

  • The North Carolina women's soccer hosts Weber State at 7 p.m. on Friday before taking on Fresno State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
  • In its final scrimmage before the regular season, the North Carolina field hockey team plays Old Dominion at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Henry Stadium.
  • The No. 5 North Carolina men's soccer team travels to Conway, S.C., on Saturday to face off against No. 21 Coastal Carolina in UNC's final exhibition before the regular season.
