Few students watching election results at Union, Republican takeover reported

Although the Union television is tuned to CNN, only about 30 people are in the main hall and most are just studying. Only seven students sit directly facing the television. It’s pretty quiet.

“All five of us?” asked UNC senior Ian Jeffries when informed him that The Daily Tar Heel is reporting on the students watching the results of the midterm elections at the Union.

“There aren’t many people here,” Jeffries said. He said he came to the Union seeking a television to watch the news he usually reads online.

“It’s a big event,” he said. “I always vote. To have self-government requires people to vote.”

As CNN announces Republicans now have control of the house, ‘that’s crazy’, ‘wow’, and ‘bummer’ are heard from the front row of the Union.

“That’s not what I wanted,” said UNC senior Laura Maxwell. “I was disappointed. I wasn’t necessarily surprised.”

The Democrat students said they were concerned about the impact the divided government would have on President Barack Obama’s agenda.

“I’m concerned that Obama won’t be able to pass laws that will benefit this country,” said UNC senior Katie Kelly.
