Safewalkers Matt Schaefer and Kelly Knowles explain how students can stay safe when walking around campus at night.

Studying late at the library but worried about how you’ll get home? Safewalk, a student-government program that assigns student walkers to help you get home, is moving off-campus. The program runs Sunday through Thursday between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

The program will roll out in three stages, the first of which started last week. Tell us, do you use Safewalk? Will you be more likely to do so now that they can walk you home off-campus?

Phase One
Began last week and covers Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. up to Longview Street and Mill Creek Apartments; Hillsborough Street down to Townhouse Apartments; Henderson Street; and North Street. The first phase will also expand coverage of Franklin Street and Rosemary Street. On Franklin Street, Safewalk will cover between Roberson Street and Davie Circle. On Rosemary Street, Safewalk will serve locations between Rosemary Village/Mitchell Lane and Boundary Street.

Phase Two
Begins on March 20 and cover the areas on and around Cameron Avenue and McCauley Street. Specifically, the locations that will be added are Mallette Street, Kenan Street, Cameron Court, Basnight Lane and Roberson Street. Additionally, Ransom Street, Vance Street and Pittsboro Street will be covered along McCauley Street.

Phase Three
The third and final phase, beginning on April 17, will cover areas around Church Street. On Church Street, Safewalk will serve up to Caldwell Street, thus covering Lindsay Street, Cotton Street, McDade Street, Brooks Street, Carr Street and parts of Pritchard Avenue. On North Columbia Street, Safewalk will expand coverage up to and including Longview Street, Stinson Street, Stephens Street and Isley Street.

Phase descriptions provided by Safewalk.
