Picture this: It’s a beautiful fall afternoon in Chapel Hill. You’ve just finished your final midterm and now you decide to take a walk through the quad and admire the clear, Carolina blue skies and the fall foliage. You happen to pass underneath a tree, when BAM, something hits you on the head.

The culprit? An acorn.

More and more unsuspecting students fall victim to these acorn attacks every day. Simply walking to class has turned into a risky venture. Personally, I think the squirrels are behind this. But with the trees still changing as fall continues, the acorns won’t be going anywhere soon.

Luckily, there are some safety precautions you can take to protect yourself from an acorn attack.

Carry an umbrella

By carrying an umbrella underneath the trees, you can defend yourself against the barrage of falling acorns that occurs with every gust of wind.

Wear a helmet

Wearing a helmet can protect your head from any possible acorn assault, though it is not efficient in preventing acorns from attacking any other part of your body. And maybe it’s not the most stylish option…

Take an alternate path to class

Of course, taking a different route to class and avoiding as many trees as possible is your best method of protection against the acorns. It may take a little longer, but you would be safe and without bruises.

So enjoy your day, stay safe and beware the acorns.
