Wishing for a snow day

While it’s still uncertain whether UNC will cancel classes, students and employees are preparing for anything — but students are hoping for snow.

If the UNC system goes into a Condition 3, which means classes are canceled and offices are closed, freshman Council Dawson said her only plans for a snow day is to watch “Modern Family.”

“Last night I flushed an ice cube down the toilet, so hopefully that did the trick,” Dawson said.

Currently UNC is running on Condition 2 for adverse weather conditions, but only for classes that began at 5 p.m. on January 28.

Department of Public Safety Spokesman Randy Young said ultimately Chancellor Carol Folt, in conference with constituent parties, decides whether or not to cancel class.

“Every storm is different and every situation is different,” Young said.

He also said if snow persists, staff will stay on after their shift at DPS, particularly those involved in maintenance.

“The important thing is to make sure that people know where to get that information — we suggest following DPS on Twitter and checking unc.edu for updates,” he said.

Communications Director for Carolina Dining Services Brandon Thomas said if severe weather conditions persist, some locations may be closed tomorrow and there are possible delays in places opening.

“Generally speaking, Rams Head will always be open for three meals a day in extreme weather,” Thomas said.

Sophomore Courtney Jordan said tonight, whether classes were canceled or not, she planned to curl up in bed with hot chocolate and Netflix.

“I know we didn’t cancel classes until late tonight, but I know schools like NC State canceled classes earlier today and I think that was smart.”

“The way North Carolina reacts to the threat of snow is the best, I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she said. “It’s the easiest snow day I’ve ever acquired.”
