Professors using technology during class is more distracting than Facebook

There is an emerging trend on campus that professors want to ban laptops from classrooms in order to decrease distractions.

And I get that.

That makes sense to me.

But, also…

Please raise your hand if you have ever been distracted by a professor’s inability to use technology efficiently in a classroom.

Thought so.

Professors seemed to be so worried about students using their laptops for distractions during class but in reality nothing distracts us more than a professor’s inability to operate technology and here is how we feel about some of it.

1. When you struggle for 3 minutes to open the projection screen.

It’s not a laser light show or brain surgery. Stop pressing random buttons and have your TA do it for you before class starts.

2. When you click aimlessly around the screen trying to start a PowerPoint.

There is a permanent “Start PowerPoint” button located at the bottom of the screen.

3. When you only use Internet Explorer.

Learn to love yourself and use a faster, sleeker internet browser.

4. Make the syllabus a Word Document

Microsoft Word takes too long to open. Additionally, it should only be used when typing or editing and we’re not opening up the syllabus to add anything to it.

5. When you leave the mouse in middle of the screen during a video.

It’s just proper video viewing procedure to leave the cursor on the side of the screen.
