Men's soccer team opens season with 4-0 victory

The North Carolina men’s soccer team opened the 2012 season with an explosive offensive performance, knocking off Gardner-Webb 4-0 at Fetzer Field Saturday night.

The top-ranked Tar Heels wasted no time netting their first goal of the season, as in the third minute, junior Andy Craven, playing his first season with UNC after transferring from College of Charleston, drilled a goal into the back of the net from 22 yards out off a rebound.

UNC outshot Gardner-Webb 17-1 as it dominated possession throughout the game, keeping goalkeeper Scott Goodwin clear of danger. The Tar Heels put seven of their 17 shots on frame.

Senior Jordan Gafa added to the lead in the 67th minute on the first of two assists from freshman Danny Garcia.

Garcia would also contribute to a 72nd minute goal by Chapel Hill native Chipper Root after Craven sent Garcia a ball in the attacking third.

The Tar Heels capped the victory with an 89th minute penalty kick from freshman David Walden.
