UNC loses efficiency battle, wins first half against VCU

Though the North Carolina field hockey team leads Virginia Commonwealth 2-1 at the half, the Tar Heels are likely disappointed the lead is that slim.

UNC left plenty of goals on the field during the first half — they took 11 shots before the Rams took just one, but that one shot was enough to give VCU a 1-0 lead. It was just the fourth goal the Tar Heels had allowed in the first half all season, and only the second time (Stanford was the first) an opponent has opened the scoring against UNC in regulation.

Going into the half, UNC’s aggressive play has earned it 18 shots on eight penalty corners. though VCU’s goalkeeper Megan Botteri saved 10 of them.

Sinead Loughran scored the first goal on the run from the right of the cage to equalize, and Kelsey Kolojejchick rebounded her initial shot to put the Tar Heels ahead 2-1.

VCU has still taken just one shot.
